Lord God,
When I board this airplane and hear the engines gear up for takeoff, I am amazed by the power and dynamics that lift a 70-ton machine into the sky. Yet it is such a small amount of power compared to the power You have. As the plane lifts up off the ground, I praise You that You are my refuge and that Your everlasting arms are holding me. (Deuteronomy 33:26) My safety is not ultimately in the hands of the pilots or the manufacturers but in You. Thank You that You keep me safe in the palm of Your hand.
As we fly over the ground at 30,000 feet, the earth below looks so small. I can no longer see the farmer in the field or the child on the sidewalk, yet You do. Who are we humans that You should be concerned about us? Yet You gave us souls that would live into eternity. You adopted us into Your family and made us joint-heirs with Jesus. You have given us an opportunity to serve the Almighty God of the Universe, even though our efforts and achievements are so small compared to what an army of angels could do.
What a beautiful world You gave us to enjoy. Thank You for stars in the night sky, a pink and gold dawn, blue skies, green forests, teal oceans, white sandy beaches, and so much more. You are such a great artist. Thank You for letting us enjoy Your artistry from 30,000 feet in the air.
As we descend and land safely on the ground, thank You for this method of getting places quickly. Air travel has made our world more accessible. Let us use this gift wisely for the Gospel's sake.
Amen.
