Safety in Travel

Lord,

Every year, we drive thousands of miles. Millions of cars are on the roads. Yet we do not expect that we will get into an accident. We expect that we will arrive at our destination on time and without incident. Yet accidents that maim and destroy lives happen every day. So we ask for safety as we drive today.

Keep the drivers alert to anything that may be a danger. Let them be aware, not only of their own car and of their own obedience to the rules of the road, but also to the dangers present around them. An animal can so easily dart out in front of them. Drivers in vehicles around them can be sleepy or inattentive. Weather, especially snow and ice, can make driving more dangerous. So, Lord, we ask, not only for the one driving our car, but also for the drivers around us that we would have safety as we travel today.

For those traveling by air, we also ask for safety. At any time, 10,000 planes can be in the air at once. Give the pilots alertness and attentiveness to the instructions from the control tower. Give them the wisdom they need to navigate dangerous weather formations. Help them to know how to deal with minor things that arise while they are in flight. Give the crew wisdom as well, and help the passengers to make the connections they need to make as they change planes. Give the passengers health and good attitudes so that their flights will be pleasant for them and for the people around them.

Thank You that we live in an age where the manufacturers of our cars and airplanes care about safety. Not nearly as many things go wrong as they used to. Cars don't even have many flat tires anymore.
Yet our lives are not in the hands of the manufacturers, air traffic control, TSA, or drivers. Our lives are in Your hands. So when we get to our destination without incident, remind us to give You thanks for keeping us safe throughout our journey.

Amen.
